My California

So as many of you know, the past 8 months have been tough for me and my family. My mom became ill and overnight, our lives got turned inside out and upside down. It’s been hard, and the stress levels have been high.

My mom is recovering nicely. Despite a minor setback, she’s looking really good these days.

My son is getting settled into the new house and is making friends in the neighborhood.

Me… well, I haven’t been doing as well. In the midst of taking care of everybody else, I forgot to take care of me. The stress of getting this house in order and becoming the “glue” holding the family together overnight had me stressed to the point of panic attacks. I can tell you I never want to have one of those again. They suck.

So I knew I had to do two things.

1) Find a way to get a break.

2) Find a way to manage stress on a daily basis.

While I’m still working on #2, I did finally get a break. And what a beautiful break it was! I drove up north to a small town called Gualala. Most folks have never heard of it. It’s very roughly about half way between San Francisco and Eureka (the last town on the map before you cross over into Oregon). It’s a small, quaint town with not a lot going on other than a few shops and restaurants. Exactly what I needed.

I spent 3 glorious days doing nothing and came back a new woman. Of course, it only took one morning for all the stress to hit me again, but I was able to handle it much better after a break. I’m so grateful I got to enjoy the coast for a bit. It soothes my soul every time without fail.

So I thought I’d share some of my photos with you here. Photos of “My California”. I hope you enjoy them.

  1. Praying for you, Tiffany, and glad you got a well deserved break. I’ve been following your blog for years now and have loved all your recipes and getting to know you through it. Continue to be strong and just deal with the days as they come. I’ve had quite a few obstacles to go through as well and as cliche as it is, and as hard as it is, giving it all to God helps. I suffer from panic attacks too and when I try to focus on giving Him my problems, it helps.

    1. Lori – My pleasure! I’m happy you enjoyed them! The coast is definitely a marvelous place for taking photos. 🙂

  2. You ought to come up the the real last town(s) on the map before the Oregon border (it’s not Eureka). For some reason, everyone neglects Crescent City, in Del Norte County. We have the most pristine river in California, the undammed Smith River, the glorious redwoods, beaches for days, and we have an interesting history with tsunamis.
If you’d ever be interested in coming up, I would love to give you a list of beautiful places to check out up here, and lots of things to do (or not do). Many blessings to you and your mom!!

    1. Annette – It’s funny, I was just looking at real estate in that area the other day online. If I ever head up that way, I will be sure to get in touch! Thank you! Sounds beautiful. 🙂
